2. Watch the Sunset at La Roca
The rock formation that gave El Tunco its name (it looks like a sleeping pig) is the best sunset viewpoint in town. Grab a drink from a beachfront bar and find a spot on the sand. Sunset makes for some great Instagram photos!
3. Hike to Tamanique Waterfalls
About 30 minutes from El Tunco, this moderate hike leads through tropical forest to natural swimming pools. It’s a half-day outing, so most people book it as a guided tour. Click here to book your tour
4. Sip Craft Beer with Ocean Views
Cadejo Brewing Company’s cliffside location near El Sunzal has become a favorite for lunch, sunset drinks, and their signature ocean-view pool.
5. Take a Sunrise Yoga Class
Several oceanfront studios, including Balance Surf & Yoga, offer daily classes that pair perfectly with a morning surf session.
6. Explore the Tide Pools at Low Tide
Walk along the rocky stretches near La Bocana at low tide to spot small fish, crabs, and starfish tucked into the pools.
7. Day Trip to El Zonte (“Bitcoin Beach”)
This laid-back neighbor beach, about 30 minutes away, is known for its mellow vibe and role in El Salvador’s Bitcoin experiment.
8. Rent a Scooter and Explore Surf City
Renting a scooter is an easy, affordable way to hop between El Tunco, El Sunzal, and El Zonte at your own pace.
9. Try Pupusas and Fresh Ceviche
No visit is complete without pupusas, El Salvador’s national dish, or a plate of ceviche from a beachfront restaurant.

10. Day Trip to Santa Ana Volcano
For a change of scenery, book a guided hike up Santa Ana Volcano to see its turquoise crater lake, one of the most memorable views in the country.

Our Honest Tip
Don’t try to cram all 10 into one trip. Pick two or three day trips, and leave plenty of time to simply enjoy El Tunco’s slow, beachy pace, that’s really what makes this town special.
