Public Bus: The Budget-Friendly Way

If you’re comfortable with a bit of adventure, the local microbus is the way locals get to the beach. Look for Route 102 or the air-conditioned 102A heading toward La Libertad/Sunzal.

  • From San Salvador: Catch it at Punto de Microbuses Ruta 102, or the Ceiba de Guadalupe stop near San Benito
  • From El Tunco: Flag it down along the coastal highway (CA-2) at the entrance to town
  • Buses run roughly every 20–30 minutes from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., but they thin out fast after sunset, so don’t leave the beach too late

Heads-up on the return trip

Here’s something we tell every friend who visits: it’s easy to catch a ride to the coast, but rides back to San Salvador (especially by rideshare app) can be scarce in the evening. If you’re not taking the bus, line up a shuttle or private driver for your return before you head out for the day.

Private Transfer or Driver: The Easiest Way

If it’s your first trip, arriving late, or traveling with family, a private transfer takes all the guesswork out of it. A driver meets you at the airport or your hotel and takes you straight to El Tunco — no waiting on the highway, no transfers.

  • Great for groups splitting the cost
  • Ideal if you’re arriving with surfboards or lots of luggage
  • Can often be booked round-trip so your return ride is guaranteed

Renting a Car

Driving yourself gives you the freedom to stop at spots like Playa El Zonte or La Libertad along the way. The route is mostly straightforward via the coastal highway, though construction near La Libertad can occasionally slow things down.

Our Honest Take

For a first visit, we usually recommend booking a private transfer or rental car for peace of mind, then using the local bus for short hops once you’re settled into El Tunco’s laid-back rhythm.
