Why We Chose These Hotels

Coming from the U.S., Oscar and I always look for a few non-negotiables when choosing hotels, air conditioning (especially in a hot climate), a great location for walking or public transportation access, and a comfortable place to rest after long days exploring. I’ve carefully suggested only hotels we would personally stay at, keeping comfort, safety, and respect for the local community in mind. Choosing well-located hotels also supports walking, local dining, and more sustainable travel in Santa Ana and anywhere you visit!

Located in the western highlands, this historic city offers beautiful architecture and offers easy access to some of the country’s most incredible natural wonders. Whether you’re sipping locally-grown coffee in a cozy café or exploring the nearby volcanoes, Santa Ana is the perfect base for your western El Salvador adventure.

Why Visit Santa Ana El Salvador?

Santa Ana pulses with an energy that’s different from the capital or coastal cities. The air is cooler here, the pace a bit slower, and the colonial buildings tell stories of coffee barons and centuries past. The city’s economic importance as a coffee-growing region has shaped its character, and you’ll feel that blend of tradition and modern creativity everywhere you go.

Santa Ana History

Founded on July 26, 1569, the city of Santa Ana began as the indigenous settlement of Sihuatehuacán before Spanish bishop Bernardino de Villalpando built a chapel and renamed it in honor of Saint Anne. Over the centuries, Santa Ana grew into one of El Salvador’s most vibrant and culturally rich cities, blending colonial heritage with modern charm. Its early parish church, built around 1575, laid the foundation for the city’s religious and architectural legacy, later replaced by the stunning neo-Gothic Cathedral of Our Lady Saint Anne, begun in 1906. Today, visitors can explore beautifully preserved landmarks like Iglesia El Calvario and Iglesia El Carmen, both dating to the 1800s, which showcase Santa Ana’s enduring devotion and history. This historic past gives Santa Ana its distinct character, where centuries-old architecture meets a lively, welcoming atmosphere.
