Santa Ana History

Founded on July 26, 1569, the city of Santa Ana began as the indigenous settlement of Sihuatehuacán before Spanish bishop Bernardino de Villalpando built a chapel and renamed it in honor of Saint Anne. Over the centuries, Santa Ana grew into one of El Salvador’s most vibrant and culturally rich cities, blending colonial heritage with modern charm. Its early parish church, built around 1575, laid the foundation for the city’s religious and architectural legacy, later replaced by the stunning neo-Gothic Cathedral of Our Lady Saint Anne, begun in 1906. Today, visitors can explore beautifully preserved landmarks like Iglesia El Calvario and Iglesia El Carmen, both dating to the 1800s, which showcase Santa Ana’s enduring devotion and history. This historic past gives Santa Ana its distinct character, where centuries-old architecture meets a lively, welcoming atmosphere.

Cerro Verde National Park A cloud forest with trails offering views of three volcanoes. The air smells like pine and earth, and on clear mornings, the views are magical.

Tazumal Mayan Ruins About 30 minutes away in Chalchuapa, these well-preserved ruins offer a glimpse into El Salvador’s ancient past.

Practical Tips for Visiting Santa Ana

• Getting there: Santa Ana is about 1 hour from San Salvador by bus, but rental car is more recommended.
• Best time to visit: November through April for dry season hiking

• Safety: Like any city, stay aware of your surroundings however all of El Salvador it is extremely safe!

Every time Oscar and I visit Santa Ana, we’re struck by how underrated it is. While tourists flock to the beach towns, this city offers something deeper, a chance to experience authentic Salvadoran culture, incredible coffee, and access to some of the country’s most beautiful natural sites all in one place.

Don’t skip Santa Ana on your El Salvador trip. Use it as your base to explore the west, wake up early to hike the volcano, spend afternoons wandering colonial streets, and end your days with a cup of locally-grown coffee while watching the sun set behind the mountains.

This region deserves at least 2-3 days of your itinerary, trust us, you’ll want to slow down and enjoy every minute of it!
