7 Best Things to Do in Lago de Coatepeque, El Salvador

If you’re wondering what things to do in Lago de Coatepeque, you’re in for a treat. This crater lake outside Santa Ana is one of the most beautiful spots in El Salvador, and every time Oscar and I visit, we find a new reason to fall for it. Below are our seven favorite things to do in Lago de Coatepeque, based on our own trips and plenty of time chatting with locals.
7 Best Things to Do in Lake Coatepeque
1. Swim, Kayak, or Paddleboard
The water at Lago de Coatepeque stays warm nearly all year, and it’s calm enough for a relaxing swim. Hotel’s like Cardedeu Hotel Lago de Coatepeque offers Kayaks for guests. Several lakeside restaurants rent kayaks and paddleboards by the hour, so you can glide across that turquoise water at your own pace.
2. Take a Jet Ski Around the Lake (Funniest Option!)
For something faster, hop on a jet ski. Most hotels offer jet ski service, or you can walk up to vendors near the main waterfront restaurants. Check out this quick TikTok of our son on our last trip!

3. Book a Private Boat Tour (Another great option to see the entire lake!)
A private boat tour lets you see the entire lake, including the homes tucked between the shoreline and Isla Teopán. Many tours also stop near the lake’s natural hot spots, a fun reminder that you’re floating inside a volcanic crater.
4. Ride the Ferry to a Lakefront Restaurant
Pontoon ferry boat that carries visitors out to the restaurant area at Restaurante Las Palmeras. It’s a fun, low-key way to take in the scenery from the water (note: this ferry doesn’t circle the full lake).

5. Watch the Sunrise or Sunset From a Mirador
The lookout points above the lake give you that postcard shot of the water glowing gold and pink. Tekunal Lago De Coatepeque and El Gran Mirador (1) both sit up on the hillside with panoramic views, perfect for photos and a slow dinner.
6. Pair It With Santa Ana Volcano and Cerro Verde
This is a must if you have the time. Hike the Santa Ana Volcano in the morning, then head down to the lake for a relaxing afternoon. Your feet will thank you for a soak in the Cardedeu pool after the climb.
7. Eat Lakeside Salvadoran Food
No visit is complete without a meal by the water. Try grilled fish at La Pampa, or comfort food with a view at Las Palmeras or Tekunal.

A Few Honest Notes
Weekends bring crowds from San Salvador, so if you can, visit midweek. And please treat the lake gently: pack out your trash, skip single-use plastics, and support the small family-run spots that make this place special.
